YourCVMaker vs Reactive Resume (2026)

Reactive Resume's whole pitch is written directly into its own GitHub repository: "the codebase is open source under the MIT license, with no tracking, no ads, and no paid tier" and "Reactive Resume is and always will be free and open source." That's not a free tier sitting below a paywall -- there's no paywall anywhere in the product, hosted free at rxresu.me or run yourself via Docker. That's a genuinely different, and in real ways more generous, free story than ours. Here's a fact-checked look at both, verified directly against the project's own GitHub repository today -- its hosted rxresu.me and docs.rxresu.me domains returned a DNS failure through our run environment's network egress, noted below rather than skipped.

At a glance

This page compares YourCVMaker and Reactive Resume on pricing model, templates, AI access and self-hosting, verified directly against github.com/AmruthPillai/Reactive-Resume on October 16, 2026 (the project's canonical source; its hosted rxresu.me and docs.rxresu.me domains could not be reached directly from our run environment -- a DNS failure, not a product fact, so we're noting it rather than guessing at what those pages say beyond what a WebSearch snippet of docs.rxresu.me's own quickstart page separately confirmed about free account sign-up).

Reactive Resume has no paid tier at any level -- the hosted instance and the self-hosted Docker version are both free forever, funded by donations rather than a subscription. What it doesn't include is anything resembling our ATS check or AI credits: its AI writing features are optional and require you to bring your own paid API key from OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic, and there is no built-in ATS scoring or keyword matching at all. YourCVMaker charges one flat €9.99/month and bundles AI credits and an ATS-Friendly export into every plan without needing an external API key.

Where Reactive Resume is genuinely strong

This is the most honestly "free" resume builder we've compared against yet -- not a free tier sitting below a paywall, but a product with no paywall anywhere in it. Per its own GitHub README: "the codebase is open source under the MIT license, with no tracking, no ads, and no paid tier" and "Reactive Resume is and always will be free and open source." Unlimited resumes, PDF/JSON/DOCX export, shareable links with optional password protection, two-factor authentication and OAuth sign-in all ship free, funded by community donations through Open Collective and GitHub Sponsors rather than a subscription.

For anyone who doesn't want their resume data sitting on a company's server at all, the project also ships as a self-hostable Docker stack (PostgreSQL for data plus storage for uploads; Redis and SMTP optional) -- a real data-control option we don't offer. Running your own instance means no third party, including the project itself, ever sees your resume data.

Two different funding models, same product category

Reactive Resume keeps the entire builder free and funds itself through voluntary donations instead of charging anyone directly for the product. YourCVMaker charges one flat subscription and, in exchange, bundles in things Reactive Resume leaves for you to bring yourself: AI credits that work out of the box with no separate API key or bill from OpenAI/Google/Anthropic, and an ATS-Friendly export built and tested as part of the product rather than left undocumented. Neither model is objectively better -- a technically comfortable user who already has (or doesn't need) an AI API key and just wants a clean, free, open-source editor is better served by Reactive Resume; someone who wants AI writing help and an ATS check included without managing a separate API key or bill is better served by YourCVMaker.

What YourCVMaker adds beyond a free, bring-your-own-AI builder

Every YourCVMaker plan gives you the Advanced Editor -- 215 of our 229 templates run through a canvas of individually selectable, moveable, resizable elements (text, photos, shapes, icons), while still exporting back out as clean, ATS-parseable text underneath (the remaining 14 use a simpler Quick/AI Editor). Beyond the resume itself: AI-personalized cover letters and a live, camera-on mock Interview Prep tool that scores clarity, confidence and speaking balance in real time and hands you a transcript afterward both ship on Pro, and an AI Job Search across eight boards, de-duplicated into a 5-stage tracker, ships on every plan. Every plan also exports two PDFs from the same resume: a Designer PDF for the template you chose, and a separate ATS-Friendly PDF built as plain, structured text, checked with four automated tests before every release -- on Free, that ATS-Friendly PDF is capped at 1 download per account and carries a small footer credit line, while the Designer PDF still requires Pro.

Pricing structure, side by side

Reactive Resume charges nothing at any level -- the hosted rxresu.me instance and a self-hosted Docker deployment are both free forever, per its own GitHub README, with the project funded entirely by voluntary donations through Open Collective and GitHub Sponsors rather than a subscription or paid tier. YourCVMaker has one paid tier, a flat €9.99/month with nothing above it -- the free plan already includes access to every template.

Frequently asked questions

Is Reactive Resume really free, with no catch?
Yes -- per its own GitHub README, "the codebase is open source under the MIT license, with no tracking, no ads, and no paid tier," and the hosted instance at rxresu.me is free to use. The one thing worth knowing: its optional AI writing features require you to bring your own API key from OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic, which you'd pay that provider for separately -- Reactive Resume itself never charges for anything.
Does Reactive Resume include AI writing help the way YourCVMaker does?
Not out of the box. Its AI features are optional and only work if you connect your own API key from OpenAI, Google Gemini or Anthropic, per its own README -- there's no AI access included without one. YourCVMaker gives every Free account 10 AI credits a month with no separate key or bill, and 500/month on Pro.
Can I self-host Reactive Resume instead of using the hosted version?
Yes -- it's designed for this. Its own GitHub repository documents a Docker deployment (PostgreSQL for data plus storage for uploads; Redis and SMTP optional) so you can run your own instance and keep full control of your resume data. YourCVMaker is a hosted service only, with no self-hosting option.
