Software Engineer Resume: Examples & Why Specificity Is the Whole Game

A software engineer resume gets skimmed in under ten seconds by someone technical enough to spot vague bullet points immediately. Specificity is the entire game.

What actually makes a difference

  • Name your stack precisely — "Python" is fine, "Python (Django, pandas, pytest)" gets you past keyword filters for the roles that actually use those tools.
  • Replace "worked on" with what shipped: "reduced API response time 40%" beats "improved backend performance" every time.
  • Link a GitHub or portfolio — for engineering roles, it often gets checked before the resume's second page would.
  • Cut anything older than 10 years unless it's directly relevant; recency reads as relevance in this field more than most.
